Swiss athletes best in EYOC Sprint

Biggest winning margin in the 4 Sprint races today was set by the Hungarian W18 runner Rita Maramarosi, who beat the favourite, Eeva Liina Ojanaho from Finland, by 51 seconds. Switzerland leads Finland by 9 points in the European Youth Championships team competition after today’s Sprint race.

Competition was fierce in the streets and parks of Velingrad, Bulgaria for the first race of the three-race EYOC. The 4 classes – M & W 18 and M & W 16 – each had close to 100 competitors, with 32 nations in all being represented.

Hungary won 2 gold medals, Maramarosi being joined by Tamas Felfoldi in M18 who won his race by 33 seconds. The other golds went to Finland (Aapo Virkajarvi, M16 who won by 0.05) and Switzerland (Rahel Good, W16, winning margin 0.15). Finland won most medals today (4), followed by Switzerland (3) Hungary (2) and Czechia, Italy and Slovakia one each.

In the team competition, the best 8 athletes from each nation counted on a points system to the team’s total score. The top three teams are Switzerland (429 points), Finland (420) and Czechia (358).
