Orienteering confirmed for The World Games 2029 in Karlsruhe

The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) is proud to announce that orienteering has been officially included in the sports programme for The World Games 2029.

The programme was formally unveiled on 25 April 2026 after being ratified at the IWGA Annual General Meeting held at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Scheduled to take place from 19 to 29 July 2029 in Karlsruhe, Germany, The World Games will bring together around 4,000 athletes from more than 100 countries. The event is widely recognised as the premier international competition for sports not currently included in the Olympic Games, offering a unique platform for innovation, diversity and sporting excellence.

Orienteering has since 2001 been a part of the World Games programme, showcasing the sport’s unique combination of endurance, navigation and strategic decision-making.

Orienteering’s inclusion for 2029 highlights both the sports global appeal and its alignment with the IWGA’s vision of sustainability and dynamic urban integration, as the Karlsruhe edition aims to maximise the use of existing venues and bring competitions closer to spectators in the city centre.
