New procedure for P class eligibility in TrailO

Competitors who have a permanent disability that significantly reduces their ability to participate in orienteering events are eligible to be entered for the P class in Trail orienteering. Three impairment types will be considered: mobility (MI), cardiac/cardiopulmonary (CP), and neurological (NI).

Starting in 2025, athletes who wish to gain or renew their classification status, should complete one of the new application forms (available on the TrailO section of the IOF website) and send together with requested medical documents to the IOF office three months before the championship. After initial approval of the paperwork by the IOF TrailO Classifiers, an appointment for an in-person classification assessment will be made.

In 2025, in-person assessments will be offered at 3 events: on 7/8 June 2025 at Falco Cup in Lithuania; on 5-6 July 2025 at Siben TrailO Cup in Italy, and on 25/26 August at WTOC in Hungary. Confirmation of P class eligibility at either of these events will give entry to the P class at WTOC 2025. Depending on the assessed stability of the condition, a P class eligibility certificate might be awarded for just one season, several seasons or permanently. Athletes must be able to communicate in English or bring a team official or interpreter for the classification session.

P class eligibility certificates issued in previous years will remain valid until their current end date or until 1st October 2027, whichever is sooner. This means that all P class participants at WTOC 2027 and future championships will need to have followed the new classification procedure. Classification events in 2026 and beyond will be announced by February each year.

The IOF TrailO Commission hopes that the new classification system will enable wider participation in TrailO through the inclusion of additional impairments for P class eligibility and increased fairness through implementing in-person classification at events conducted by our team of TrailO classifiers.
