Young orienteers from around the world will have another chance to compete for the Junior World Orienteering Championships forest competitions, which were cancelled in July due to the ban on forest activities in Portugal.
After consulting with member federations, team leaders and the local organisers, the IOF Council decided to have further JWOC medal competitions in Aguiar de Beira, Portugal from November 3 – 6.
The program will feature:
Friday, Nov. 4: Middle distance with no qualification (as from 2023 and onwards)
Saturday, Nov. 5: Relay
Sunday, Nov. 6: Long distance
During the consultation process, the member federations showed great interest in sharing their views and the vast majority expressed their intention to participate in November.
The name of the competition will still be JWOC 2022 and the participating member federations are allowed to make changes in the team between the two parts of the championships.
The original JWOC was held from July 9-16 and eventually featured a Sprint, a Sprint Relay and an Urban Relay (not medal competition). The forest activity ban was imposed by the Portuguese government due to the high risk of fires.
