The International Orienteering Federation achieved the highest score among 29 international sports federations in a review of the federations’ governance, which was released in connection with the International Federation Forum in Switzerland at the end of October.
The review was conducted by the sports governance consultancy “I Trust Sport” among participating federations under the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF).
The measurement was carried out over 25 different indicators that illustrate the federations’ governance practices within, among other things, transparency, integrity and sustainability, and here IOF achieved 91 points out of a theoretical maximum of 100. In comparison, the average score was 55.

Clear improvements since 2019
A similar review was conducted in 2019, where IOF also scored highest among the participating federations.
At that time, IOF achieved 65 out of a maximum of 80 points and used the survey to identify a number of areas for improvement.
This was, among other things, the starting point for the decision to introduce Athletes’ representation in IOF’s Council and Commissions.
It is worth noting that IOF has improved its score in all of the identified areas for improvement since 2019.
“We have reason to be proud of our excellent ranking in the governance review once again. The figures document that our efforts in recent years are helping to improve our governance practices and that we are working to live up to our values, which include Ethical as one of the three. The result gives us energy to continue working to improve our governance also in the years to come,” IOF President Tom Hollowell says.
