CX80 EMTBOC: Europe’s MTBO stars gather in Poland

Poland is the host for this year’s CX80 World Cup first round, the European MTBO Championships, with four days of intense racing scheduled from Thursday to Sunday. 109 athletes from 20 nations will be striving for the medals.

Almost all the top names in MTBO are entered, including all the defending European Champions except for Kaarina Nurminen, Finland, who won the Sprint in 2022 in Lithuania. Krystof Bogar, Czechia, second in the IOF World Rankings, took the men’s Sprint title and is part of a full-strength Czech team that can be expected to be amongst the leading riders this week. His compatriot Vojtech Stransky is the defending Middle distance champion. Denmark and Finland both won two titles in 2022 and come to Poland with strong teams; the Danes Nikoline Splittorff (current World Rankings leader) and Camilla Søgaard will be defending the Long and Middle titles respectively. Finland’s Samuel Pokala is the defending Long distance champion.

The Junior and Youth European Championships are also taking place here and in these, 17 nations will be represented.

The venue is Ostróda in northern Poland, a town in the Masuria holiday region with its forests and many lakes – “the green lungs of Poland”. Ideal for MTBO, with a high density of paths and tracks and big areas of pine and beech woodland, and moderately hilly. Riding off-track is generally allowed, but as the soil can be soft and sandy it is not necessarily the best choice, even if a short-cut looks inviting on the map. It’s clear that there’ll be lots of high-speed decision-making here!

There are 3 individual competitions, and on the last day the Mixed Relay for teams of 3 including at least one woman, won in 2022 by Czechia.

All the races will be livestreamed on IOF TV with English commentary by Linus Rapp. Tickets are 6/20 EUR for one/all competitions.
