WUOC begins in Bulgaria on Thursday

249 athletes from 30 different nations have set the course for the southwestern corner of Bulgaria, where the 2024 FISU World University Orienteering Championships take place in and around the city of Bansko.

The first championship race is the Individual Sprint on Thursday in Bansko, where a flat mix of park and urban terrain awaits and next up is the Sprint Relay in Razlog the following day. Expect another day with fast and flat racing here.

After a rest day, the championships move into the forest for a Middle distance Sunday and a three-leg Relay on Monday. The Motikata terrain, which is used for both races features hill sides with moderate to steep slopes and lots of micro contours and stones.

The races in Bulgaria make up the 23rd World University Orienteering Championships, which are held every second year. Bulgaria has hosted the WUOC once before, in Varna in 2002.
