WOC Middle Distance Qualification

The best fifteen from each of three heats qualified for the Final, where the fastest today start last. Heat winners today were Anne Margrethe Hausken Nordberg NOR, Kamilla Olaussen NOR, Cecilie Friberg Klysner DEN, Olav Lundanes NOR, Lucas Basset FRA and Matthias Kyburz SUI.

Six nations had all their athletes qualify: Czech Republic, Finland, Latvia, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland. Home nation Norway could balance the loss of one athlete in qualification with having three heat winners out of the six.

No major names missed out on qualification, although both Paul Sirum NOR and Matt Speake GBR would have hoped to qualify. Bojan Blumenstein GER was unluckiest athlete today, missing qualification by just 9 seconds.

Latvia – not a big country – will be particularly happy at being in the exalted company of nations with everyone through. Nations with just one athlete failing to qualify are Denmark, France, Great Britain and Norway. Nations with just one finalist are Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany and Ireland.

Full results from today’s heats are on the Live Orienteering page.

Tomorrow the Long Distance race takes place, the first of three races using the main WOC arena at Mørk. The men’s first start is shortly after 10.15 and the women’s around 13.15.
