More than 3,200 masters athletes took part when the first final at the World Masters Orienteering Championships in Finland was run on Sunday.
The sprint final took place in central Turku, the host of city the championships, which featured challenging courses with plenty of demanding short leg in a mix of parkland and hard surfaces with a beautiful run-in in front of Turku Cathedral.
The Finnish home favorites grabbed a total of nine gold medals on the first day of the finals, among them Sole Nieminen in the oldest age group, W95. The Norwegian masters athletes grabbed six golds, while Great Britain got the third most with four golds.

After a rest day on Monday, it is time for the forest qualification race on Tuesday, which will determine the final fields for medium and long later in the week.
