The World Games has created a competition to award the greatest athlete of all time, across the 40-year history of The World Games competitions. One of the 24 nominated candidates for the award is Orienteering athlete Matthias Kyburz of Switzerland.

Matthias is certainly worthy of the nomination. He has participated in 2 editions of The World Games, in 2013 in Cali, Colombia and in 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland, and in his six starts at The World Games he has won a medal in each competition. Of those 6 medals, 4 of them are Gold. That makes him the most successful Orienteering athlete at The World Games among a very select set of names.
The World Games first edition was in Santa Clara California, USA in 1981 and since then has been organised every 4 years. Orienteering entered as a sport in The World Games in 2001 in Akita, Japan and has been present at every edition of the games since then.

About the Greatest Athlete of all time voting:
When the voting begins on 8th January 2021, the public audience can vote daily, everyone once per 24 hours, for their favourite. Like last year, they will also need to vote for another candidate at the same time. The first candidate they choose gets two votes, and the second candidate one vote.
The voting ends on 1st February, but 20th January is an important milestone: on Wednesday 20th January 2021 at 16:00 CET, only the 10 highest ranked candidates at that time will continue in the race. They will keep the votes earned by then. At the end, the three best athletes will be awarded with a trophy and a branded gift from the official sponsor Protective Life.
