The very first European Universities Orienteering Championship (EUOC) was held from July 23rd to July 27th in the Czech Republic. An organising team led by Jaroslav Smička and Dušan Vystavěl organized the three competitions and additional trainings in Olomouc and its surroundings.
The first competition took place on Thursday July 25th in the scenic village Bouzov in the surroundings of a local castle. This sprint qualification was won by Sven Hellmuller and Guilhem Elias in men’s category and by Tereza Janošíková and Liga Valdmane in the women’s. For the Sprint Final medal event the athletes moved to Mohelnice. In this typical czech city the most succesful men were those from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. Fastest of them was Riccardo Rancan followed by Florian Attinger and Jannis Schönleber. But the Czech fans has good reasons to be happy with Tereza Janošíková, representing Palacký University Olomouc, winning the Sprint Final after also winning the qualification race. Twelve seconds more than Tereza were needed by Virág Weiler from Budapest University of Technology and Economics, to secure her second place. The bronze medal went to another athlete from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Laura Ramstein.

The Championship continued on Friday with competition in the Middle Distance in the forests around Čechy nad Kosířem. Temperatures over 30°C together with hilly terrain made it a challengeto keep focus. Czech athletes Tereza Janošíková with Petr Horvát (University of Technology Brno) showed that they were well prepared and managed victories. Second place among the women went this time to Latvia thanks to Liga Valdmane from Latvian Academy of Sport Education. Another medal was won for the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich via Hanna Müller. The men’s race was again very succesful for Zürich athletes. with Florian Attinger and Jannis Schönleber switching their places from the day before.

On the final day of competition, the Sprint Relay, three categories were offered – women, men, and mixed. Using terrain in the city of Olomouc, teams of two ran to legs each. In the men’s category the very promising team of Florian Attinger and Riccardo Rancan were disqualified already on the first leg. This opened up for the many other good orienteers from their alma mater, so the victory stayed with the the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich thanks to duo Sven Hellmüller – Jannis Schönleber. One other team from Zürich made the podium with Silvan Ullmann and Joel Morgenthaler winning bronze. In silver medal position was the team of Tristan Bloemen and Warre De Cuyper from the Catholic University of Leuven.
In the women’s relay the team of Katrin Muller and Deborah Stadler from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich once again confirmed their qualities and won by 1:41 while at the same time three teams were fighting for silver medal. From the trio Palacký University Olomouc, Latvian Academy of Sport Education and Charles University, the latter was able to finish the fastest, when Petra Aschermannova overtook Pavla Horová of Palacký University and Elizabete Blumentale of the Latvian Academy of Sport on the final leg. The Latvian held onto third place in the end.
The most exciting race was the last one when the three top teams were overtaking each other and switching in the lead. The first to cross the finish line was Marek Schuster from Palacký University Olomouc whose teammate Tereza Janošíková went home with a golden hattrick from the championship. The Silver medal was won by Laura Ramstein with Phillip von Arx from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich. The Bronze medal went to Budapest University of Technology and Economics thanks to Virág Weiler and Mate Dalos.

During the closing ceremony the best universities were awarded. With the clear lead was the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich followed by Palacký University Olomouc and with Budapest University of Technology and Economics on the third place.
