European TrailO Championships: double TempO medal haul for home nation

The Finnish athlete Lauri Mäkinen won the Final of the TempO competition in a very tight finish where the silver medal was shared and the fourth-placed athlete missed a medal by just 1 second! All that at the end of 9 stations with 5 tasks at each – 45 decision tasks under extreme time pressure – with 30 seconds added per mistake. The winner completed the course in 320 seconds of decision action – less than 8 seconds per task.

TV filming at TempO Final

As well as for Finland, this was a successful event for Czechia, with three athletes on the podium including a silver medalist.

The Qualification event in the morning found the 36 competitors for the Final, which was held in wooded parkland around the magnificent Paavo Nurmi athletics stadium close to the centre of Turku. This was a first for live television of TempO – and lessons will be learnt on how to improve for, hopefully, future opportunities. The weather was good and there were many members of the public wandering around watching the action.

The Championships are now over – the next top-level TrailO occasion will be the 2025 World Championships, being shared between Hungary and Slovakia.
