CX80 MTBO World Cup: overall wins for Svetlana Foliforova and Simon Braendli

Neither rider won a medal in the Long Distance today, but Foliforova retained her top placing to win by just 5 points, whilst Braendli’s win yesterday at Middle Distance was decisive in giving him the lead. The Dane Camilla Søgaard became European as well as World Champion in Long with a clear 2-minute win today, whilst the men’s race ended with a first-ever international win for Marcus Jansson, Sweden.

Svetlana Foliforova, Russia finished fourth today, 5.33 down on the winning time and more than 2 minutes away from the time set by Nikoline Splittorff, Denmark for the bronze medal. Silver medalist was the Czech rider Veronika Kubinova, 1.12 quicker than Splittorff. These results mean that Camilla Søgaard finishes second to Foliforova in the overall standings and Splittorff takes fourth place ahead of Kubinova. Finland’s Marika Hara is third overall. Søgaard was very pleased with her race: “I made no mistakes and chose nearly all the best route choices,” she says. “I went carefully through some technical terrain towards the end and was therefore a bit slower, but I wanted to avoid any errors.”

For Marcus Jansson, 29, this was a great achievement and something of a surprise; he was 9^th in the equivalent race at the World MTBO Championships this year. He won by 42 seconds over the vastly experienced Russian and winner of many medals, Anton Foliforov. Bronze medalist was home athlete Davide Machado, 1.41 slower than the winner. Krystof Bogar, Czech Republic was fourth, as in the Middle race, and he ends in second place in the overall standings behind the Swiss Simon Braendli, who was sixth in the race today. Anton Foliforov is in third place overall.

…. but it wasn’t fast everywhere

The Junior, Youth and World Masters classes all had a Long Distance race today. It was a great day overall for Denmark, with Mikkel Brunstedt Nørgaard (M20) and Gertrud Riis Madsen (W17) both winning their second gold medals. Marisa Costa, Portugal (W20) also won her second gold medal.

The final day of racing is tomorrow, with the EMTBOC/CX80 World Cup riders having a Mixed Relay, the Junior and Youth classes competing in men’s and women’s relays, while the World Masters Championships ends with a Sprint.
