The International Orienteering Federation relies on voluntary work by passionate orienteers all around the world. And right now IOF is looking to strengthen its commissions with new members and volunteers for the period 2024-2026.
If you would like to influence the development of orienteering in the coming years and gain experience of working in an international federation in teams of enthusiastic and engaged volunteers, you should consider making yourself available for joining a commission.
We expect our commission members to able to communicate in English, both orally and in written form, attend and contribute in digital meetings and work on assigned projects in between the meetings.
In accordance with the IOF Strategic Directions to improve diversity and representation in the whole organisation, great importance will be placed on diversity of gender, age and regional representation when evaluating applications.
The implementation of digital meetings has made it much easier for members from all over the world to participate in the commission work and IOF will aspire to put together commissions with great diversity in gender, age and regional representation.
New nominations and re-nominations of commission members must be endorsed and submitted by the national federations, which send their nominations to IOF Secretary General, Sondre Gullord by the deadline on September 25th.
Nominations must include: Name, age, gender and relevant personal and/or professional strengths and interests.

Foot Orienteering Commission
We would like to see more nominations of young and female candidates, and to strengthen the commission with competence and experience in digital ways of working, digital educational offerings and how to effectively bring guidance and material out to organisers and other key stakeholders. Candidates must be able to devote time to commission work. Furthermore, we are looking for candidates who thinks outside the box and can challenge in the discussions about future events and formats, as well as candidates with an interest in sustainability perspectives.
MTB Orienteering Commission
We would like to receive nominations of candidates who are able to devote time to commission work and can bring new ideas to the meetings to find good organisers and develop the MTB orienteering discipline.
Ski Orienteering Commission
We would like to see more nominations of female candidates and have a critical need for strengthening the capacity/manning of the Ski Orienteering Commission. Further, it is desired with nominations of candidates with a good network in the ski orienteering community and an interest in contributing in the efforts to find good organisers for the World Cup and championships.
Trail Orienteering Commission
We would like to receive nominations of candidates with an interest in shaping the future of trail orienteering, improve fairness and attractiveness of the sport. Candidates must be able to devote time to commission work, including to prepare data and drafts for the meetings.
Global Development Commission
We would like to see more nominations of female candidates and candidates with an interest in facilitating collaboration between Member Federations, educational offerings and materials, graphic design and video production, delivery of development clinics such as (but not limited to Young Leaders Academies) and/or communication.
Environment and Sustainability Commission
The main goal of the IOF is to become a global and sustainable sport. We would like to see nominations of candidates with initiative and a proactive approach and who are able to devote time to commission work and bring new ideas to the meetings. Participation in the commission provides the opportunity to actively contribute to key sustainability and environmental issues, including efforts and measures related to climate change and biodiversity, also in connection with international initiatives IOF is part of such as the “Sports for Climate Action” and the “Sports for Nature” initiative.
The ambitions for the coming period are to provide knowledge, support and assistance to the organisers of orienteering events, to produce attractive educational materials for organisers and athletes and to communicate the sustainability of orienteering. New members with an interest in use of social media and how we actively engage to promote the sustainability of orienteering and the image of orienteering as a sustainable sport are most welcome.
IT Commission
Members of the IT Commission becomes part of a community of very experienced organisers in the IT and timekeeping and TV production domains which provides excellent opportunities for transfer of knowledge and competence. The commission helps improving the standards and execution of high-level events, with an ambition to balance the need and wishes for fantastic quality with what is feasible given the resources. We would like to receive nominations of candidates who are able to devote time to commission work and can contribute to building structure capital for the benefit of future organisers and orienteering as an attractive sport to follow.
Map Commission
We would like to receive more nominations of female candidates and candidates who are able to devote time to commission work. IOF has initiated a revision process of map standards towards 2030, and members of the commission will play a key role in facilitating good consultation processes towards Member Federations and athletes and will lead the work to shape the looks and functions of future map standards.
Rules Commission
We would like to receive more nominations of female candidates and candidates who are able to devote time to commission work. Further, it is strongly desirable to receive nominations of candidates who can contribute to digitalising the rules system and the development of a digital and transparent system for submitting, managing and filing complaints and protests.
