Alexandersson and Hubmann/Kyburz European Champions in sprint

Tove Alexandersson, Sweden took her first senior sprint gold and Swiss Daniel Hubmann and Matthias Kyburz shared the victory in the first medal race at the European Orienteering Championships in Ticino, Switzerland.

The Swedish star Tove Alexandersson started fast and was in lead through the whole course. This gold was her third individual EOC gold, but the first senior gold medal in sprint distance. At the finish she was 24 seconds faster than Judith Wyder, Switzerland. Impressive race by Wyder in her comeback after giving birth. Russian Natalia Gemperle was third, 11 seconds behind Wyder. The Swiss team succeed on home ground with five runners among the first ten.

The men’s competition was really thrilling with Daniel Hubmann and Matthias Kyburz finishing with the same time; 14.44. The Swiss runners were running equal the whole race with just a few seconds margin at all time controls. Kristian Jones, Great Britain was third, 15 seconds after the winners. The Swiss men made a great start at the championships on home ground with four runners at the podium.
