The TempO Final at the European TrailO Championships (ETOC) will be televised on Finnish TV and IOF TV as it takes place around the Paavo Nurmi stadium in Turku, Finland on Sunday afternoon, 12th May.
This is a first for TrailO, with the whole orienteering world now able to experience the tension and excitement as the final stage of the TempO competition reaches its climax with Europe’s top elite vying for the medals. Finland’s Petteri Hakala is the defending champion.
In a departure from normal practice, spectators will be able to go into the terrain and view competitors’ progress through all the TempO stations in the final.
131 athletes from 17 nations are entered for the Championships starting on 7th May. There is a PreO event over 2 days and a Relay, all with both O (Open) and P (Physically Challenged) classes, and an all-in TempO event with Qualification in the morning and the Final, for the best 36 from the heats, in the afternoon. For the first time, nations are able to enter 2 juniors in each of the classes and formats, and several have taken this opportunity. The youngest, Albert Forst from Czechia, is 14 years old – undoubtedly well trained by his father and mother, both top-class trail orienteers. His father is also in the Czech team.
Typical Finland terrain is promised, which means plenty of rock and some very subtle contour and vegetation detail. The event is quite compact, with all venues a short distance from the city and accessible by public transport. To get everyone acclimatized, there are 4 days of pre-ETOC competition, including a 2-day PreO event which is a World Ranking Event and in the 2024 European Cup for TrailO series.
A report and leading results from each ETOC day will be posted on the IOF Home Page.
